Women election process against democratic norms: SC
Supreme Court on Monday observed that the mechanism to elect the women on the quota seats is against the norms of democracy as some limited families kept on elected. A larger 17-member bench of the Supreme Court resumed the hearing of identical petitions challenging some clauses of the 18th amendment. Justice Javed Iqbal observed that a common woman could not even think to get elected to the Assembly. Justice Javed said he is not against the women representation, but the system of election is questionable. The Attorney General contended that a layman could also be made a part of the whole process if the list of the women candidates were issued on a polling booth. The court said that Raza Rabbani has also been made party in an application against the 18th amendment, and directed the AG to get the replies from him on the raised questions.
