KP: 784 basic health units under construction for past 8 years

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – Revelations have surfaced that no funds have been allocated since 2007 for the reconstruction of Basic Health Units (BHUs) whereas more than 200 BHUs are in a fragile state, reported Dunya News on Saturday.
Many districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) including Peshawar lack basic health facilities. People hailing from rural areas have to head to cities to avail basic health facilities. According to sources in Health Department, 100 out of the 784 facilities lack basic health facilities while more than 200 are in a fragile condition.
The situation is precarious in Peshawar, Haripur, Mansehra, Nowshera, Kohat, Hangu and Lakki Marwat districts. According to a report of Health Department, Rs 250 million is being spent on salaries of personnel and medicines. Each BHU receives Rs 45,000.
No funds have been not allocated for the construction and repair of BHUs since 2007. There are 8 teaching hospitals in the province, 21 district headquarters hospitals, 19 Tehsil headquarter hospitals, 125 other hospitals, 86 rural health centers, 784 BHUs, 421 dispensaries, 66 maternity health centers and 60 various health centers as well.
