18th amendment case: SC resumes hearing

A 17-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heard the petitions against the 18th amendment. Government lawyer Waseem Sajjad argued that the Parliament has the right to amend every clause in the Constitution.Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that during the tenure of dictators the powers of the Prime Minister are transferred to the Presidency. He made these remarks while conducting proceedings of the case. He said that the Judiciary wants to strengthen the democratic system in the country.Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday warmed Wasim Sajjad and his counsel to cautiously make arguments during the proceedings. He made these remarks due to the fact that Pakistan Peoples Party senator Kazim Khan was present in court. He alleged that Kazim Khan is a secret agent of the federal government.CJP expressed his satisfaction on the Parliament for returning the powers to the Prime Minister. Justice Jawad Khawja said that the sensitive issues should not be decided on road.Waseem Sajjad added that the Parliament can amend in every article of the constitution including Article 2A. Justice Ramday reiterated that Article 2A is an exception.
