Sindh govt extends Rangers' powers, notification issued.
(Web Desk) - A notification to extend Rangers’ powers for another two months has been issued by Sindh government on direction of former president Asif Ali Zardari, Dunya News reported.
According to details, Zardari called Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah and directed him to extend Rangers’ powers for another two months.
In a statement issued by Zardari, it was stated that better civil and military relations are in best interest of the country and nation and need to be strengthened.
He admitted that the role of army in war against terrorism is praiseworthy.
It merits mentioning here that Rangers’ special powers to raid and make arrests were due to end at midnight tonight.
Earlier, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali on Wednesday said that the period of special authority for Rangers is likely to be extended, adding that matters in this regard have been settled, Dunya News reported.
Addressing the media, Chaudhry Nisar said that the requisition for extension in Rangers’ powers is likely to be received by midnight.
He said Rangers have fulfilled the responsibilities that were given to them, adding that criticizing Rangers without any reason is extremely inappropriate.
The federal minister said the reservations can be discussed if there are any. He told that he talked to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah on phone and hoped that the ministry will receive a fresh requisition before the expiry period.
Chaudhry Nisar said that there have been speculations about Rangers in Karachi, adding that the media reports gave the impression as if Rangers force is rented and doesn’t belong to Pakistan. He said Rangers have played a crucial role regarding enforcing law and order in Karachi.
“Rangers showed performance while risking their own lives but it is being made controversial”, he said.
He said making statements against Rangers personnel instead of saluting them is extremely concerning, adding that Rangers are performing well within their prerogative as per the law.
Chaudhry Nisar said this is not possible that the federal government would let Rangers become a target, adding that it would be a major injustice if Rangers personnel are not defended. He said the decision to give access to the third suspect will be made after Eid.
