Karachi: MQM announces 2-day mourning over death of detained worker
DIG East has ordered an inquiry into the matter
KARACHI (Dunya News) – A Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) and Station Housing Officer (SHO) has been suspended as a result of the death of a detained party worker of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). MQM has announced 2-day mourning over the incident. Business remained close in several cities including Karachi, reported Dunya News on Wednesday.
Police personnel had picked up 3 brothers from area of Baldia, Karachi on June 3 and taken them into custody.
One of the suspects, identified as Waseem Abba, has died under custody and his body has been transferred to Jinnah Hospital.
Upon hearing the news of the casualty, relatives gathered in large amount outside Jinnah Hospital.
Several agitated protestors also blocked the road in front of Jinnah Hospital.
A policeman was also tortured by the protesters, however, he was rescued by fellow policemen.
Taking notice of the incident, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police East Munir Sheikh has suspended SHO Aziz Bhatti in addition to demoting him.
Three other personnel have also been taken into custody.
DIG East has ordered an inquiry into the matter as well.
MQM has announced 2-day mourning over the incident.
Business remained closed in Karachi as well as other cities.
