Karachi chaos: Rangers given special powers

Karachi Rangers have been given all the powers regarding arrest, search and conducting raids for a month in a bid to stem the fresh wave of target-killing in the city. Sindh Home Department issued today a notification in this regard. According to the notification, the powers will stand valid for one month. Sindh Home Minister said the police and the Rangers would jointly conduct themselves in actions against target-killings underway in the cosmopolitan city. In the meantime, a meeting was held under the chair of Sindh Interior Minister Zulfiqar Mirza to review the law and order situation of the metropolitan city. The meeting was also attended by IG Police, CCPO, and DIGs of different zones. Mirza said the killings have been hatched by some elements who wanted to destabilize the government. He said that the perpetrators of the killingsmust be having some political motives could be behind the acts. He said the bloodshed is meant to affect the trade in the city, adding that 200 persons have been arrested in this regard. Meanwhile, talking to media in Karachi, PPPs information secretary Fauzia Wahab said no political party is behind the Karachi bloodshed, however added that some powers wanted to destabilize the government. She said that traders should not afraid of the Value Added Tax (VAT) adding that the money collected this way would be added to the national kitty. On the other hand, Chief Minister Sindh convened a meeting of MQM, PPP and ANP to mull over the ongoing wave of killings in Karachi.
