Butt’' sentence must be suspended as no complaint was registered against him, says Lawyer.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday declared hearing of the petition filed to challenge verdict against Gullu Butt admissible.

Gullu Butt’s lawyer said trial court sentenced Butt to 11 years and 3 months imprisonment whereas no complaint was registered against him. He therefore requested the court to suspend Gullu Butt’s penalty and grant him bail as long as the appeal stays sub judice.

Court said there is no reason to suspend Butt’s sentence as his appeal was being heard, he must either withdraw his plea or else we may dismiss it. Gullu Butt withdrew his appeal following court’s suggestion.

The court accepted Butt’s appeal for hearing and issued notices to stakeholders including prosecutor general.

Earlier, Shahid Aziz notoriously referred to as Gullu Butt, convicted in the Model Town tragedy, had filed a petition in LHC for suspension of his sentence and release on bail.

The petition says that the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) has sentenced the petitioner in contrast to what the law and the facts say.

The petitioner has demanded release on bail after suspension of his sentence.

ATC had sentenced Aziz to 11 years and three months rigorous imprisonment and 1.1 million fine for vehicles’ vandalism in regard to the Model Town incident case.

Baton-wielding Gullu Butt was arrested after he was caught on cameras damaging several vehicles during a clash between Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers and police in Lahore s Model Town on June 17. Aziz is presently behind the bars at the Central Jail Kot Lakhpat.
