Reception of more than half a million devotees is expected at the Urs.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Festivities to celebrate the 1284th Urs of one of the most eminent saints of the sub-continent Syed Abdullah Shah Ghazi began today in Karachi.

Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad formally inaugurated the ceremony and offered Fateha along with other significant figures. The ceremonial started with bathing of the holy tomb followed by laying floral wreaths and ‘chaddar’ or devotional cloth’ on the shrine.

Reception of more than half a million devotees is expected at the Urs.

In order to ensure security of the people, the government has installed closed circuit cameras and walkthrough gates.

The first day of the Urs shall witness a Scholars’ Conference whereas qawalis would be performed later in the day.

Abdullah Shah is considered to come from the linage of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The shrine of Abdullah Shah stands as one of the major spiritual landscapes in Karachi that anticipates millions of followers, rich and poor alike, each year.

Umayyads who sent off an army to hunt him down. Umayyads are known for nurturing hatred for banu Hashim the he was exiled from Arab as Umayyads found his activities exasperating. He therefore ran away and found refuge in Karachi.

Abdullah Shah and his cronies were later found by Umayyad army. He got outnumbered but did not give up and displayed great valor in face of the army; hence the title ‘Ghazi’.
