Pakistan Bar Council rejects strike call

Chairman Executive Committee of Pakistan Bar Council Nasrullah Warraich said that the lawyers have rejected a strike call for January 28. Speaking to Dunya News, he said that Supreme Bar Council does not accept the current National Coordination Committee as it has no legal standing. The National Coordination Committee was formed under peculiar circumstances but it does not exist in Pakistan Legal Bar Act 1973. On the other side, lawyer organizations of Balochistan while supporting the decision of National Advisory Council have decided to hold complete boycott of courts on Jan. 28 and announce to organise lawyers convention in Quetta. Speaking to Dunya News, Balochistan Bar Association Vice President Ammanullah Kundi, Balochistan Bar Association General Secretary Aminullah Kakar and other lawyers have said that the leaders have turned the democratic system into authoritarian rule. They demanded the government to appoint judges in Balochistan High Court without further delay. Rejecting the call of strike on January 28, Peoples Lawyers Forum NWFP has announced to appear in the courts. Speaking in a press conference, Peoples Lawyers Forum General Secretary Mahim Khan Afridi said that 8000 people had benefitted from NRO but only one man was being targeted. He said that majority of lawyers would not take part in the strike.High Court Bar meeting in Lahore was canceled when lawyers of Peoples Lawyers Forum chanted slogans against the strike.In General House meeting of Lahore High Court Bar, Naseem Ahmed presented a resolution which called the lawyers to participate in the strike on January 28. Meanwhile, lawyers of Peoples Lawyers Forum reached in the meeting and chanted slogans in favour of President Zardari and against the strike. Other lawyers shouted slogans in favor of the strike. President Lahore High Court Bar Nasira Javed adjourned the session to avoid any untoward incident.
