10 die in rain-related incidents in Karachi

At least 10 people were killed in rain-related incidents in different parts of Karachi on Saturday.

 

KARACHI (Dunya News) - At least ten people, including two children died and several others sustained injures in rain-related incidents and from electrocution in different parts of Karachi on Saturday.

 

Heavy rain wreck havoc in Godap where several towns and Goths were flooded with rain water. Pakistan Navy personnel shifted dozens of people trapped in Saadi Town and Jalbani Road areas of Godap to safer places.

 

According details, a 3-year-old child died when the roof of their house collapsed in Gulzar-e- Hijri due to heavy rainfall. Two people died from electrocution in Paposh Nagar area of the city. One person was killed and two others were injured in Model Colony while a 50- year-old man died in Liaquatabad-C area due to electrocution. Two children drowned in storm-water drain in Korangi No 5 and another drowned in North Naizamabad area.

 

After heavy rainfall which started on Saturday morning, the roof of a CNG station collapsed at NIPA Chowrangi leaving several people injured who were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

 

According to Met Office, Landhi received the maximum amount of rainfall around 53 millimetres while 47 mm rain was recorded in Nazimabad, and 26 mm recorded near Karachi Airport.

 

Most of public transport went off the roads while taxis and rickshaws which are now devoid of fare meters fleeced those desiring to hire them for any distance.

 

Scores of vehicles were stranded on the submerged roads and their occupants were seen trying to push them through water. The Liaquatabad Underpasses were badly flooded and appeared to lack a storm-water exit besides being without light in the cloudy, dark afternoon.

 

Heavy rain also plunged the city into darkness as the power supply suspended in various areas. The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) spokesman said that different areas of the metropolis were facing feeder-tripping. At least 225 feeders were tripped due to the monsoon rain. He said that the KESC teams were working on emergency basis to control the situation.

 

Several roads in the city were flooded with rain water which also caused traffic jams.

 

Different cities and towns in the interior of Sindh also received heavy rainfall.

 

Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui declared an emergency in the city due to flooding on roads caused by a spell of monsoon rain on Saturday.

 

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has sacked Administrator Karachi, Syed Hashim Raza due to his failure of managing the post-rain crisis in the city.
