SC orders LB elections till Sept 15

AG Sindh requests not to conduct elections in Sindh before December 29 due to some problems.

 

ISLAMABAD (Online) - The Supreme Court has ordered the federal and provincial governments for necessary legislation till August 15 for holding Local Bodies’ elections on September 15.


Three members bench headed by Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while hearing the case on Monday remarked that early elections for local governments was a constitutional obligation; court will issue its own judgment if governments fail to do.


‘Local Bodies elections are rudimentary for maintaining law and order situations; criminals cannot hide themselves from local government representatives and government will be in a position to eradicate of criminals and terrorists with their help’’.


Soon after the resumption of hearing on the case, provincial governments started presenting their reports regarding conduct of local government polls.

Chief justice directed Advocate Kokab Iqbal to loge contempt of court in the High Court when he said that he had apprised the Islamabad High Court regarding conduct of election for local government that has been violated.


Advocate General Mustafa Ramday apprised before the court that he had a detailed meeting and discussion with Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, adding that elections will be held after completing constituency delimitations in two to three weeks.


Advocate General Sindh Khalid Javed said before the SC that Sindh government would hold elections at the time whenever the court will direct but it would be better to not to conduct election in Sindh before December 29 due to some problems.


CJ in his ruling said that government of Balochistan was also ready for conducting elections to Local Governments.


Federal government, while showing reservations on conduct of Local Bodies’ election in city areas if Islamabad said that it will be held in rural areas.
