Court will revoke increase in GST, says CJP

The hearing is underway at Supreme Court.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A three-member bench of the apex court is hearing the suo motu case against the hike in petroleum products on Friday.
During the course of proceedings, the chief justice asked Attorney General Munir A. Malik to present the notification earlier issued by FBR to increase general sales tax (GST).
The chief justice said that the sales tax cannot be imposed until the approval by parliament and president.
The chief justice said that the court will revoke the notification to increase GST and prices of petroleum products.
Earlier on Thursday, CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took suo motu notice of the hike in petroleum products prices as one percent increase in the sales tax was proposed in the federal budget of new fiscal year 2013-14.
According to the sources, the Chief Justice took suo moto notice on the note of Supreme Court Registrar. The CJP issued notices to Attorney General of Pakistan and relevant officials.
