Supreme Court on Wednesday resumed hearing of petition submitted by Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan.

A three member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of Asghar Khan’s petition, in which he requested the court to look into allegations that the ISI had financed many politicians in the 1990 elections by distributing Rs140 million to create the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad and stop Benazir Bhutto’s PPP from coming to power.During the hearing, the chief justice remarked that the bench was awaiting a response from the Presidency as to whether or not there were any records related to existence of a political cell.He expressed if the response would be a negative, then the court may consider summoning Ijlal Haider, a member of the election cell that Durrani had alleged had been constituted in the presidency at the time on the instructions of then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan.Justice Chaudhry also said that the position of the president was extremely significant and it was unfortunate that a former president was involved in such activities.Salman Akram Raja, counsel for Asghar Khan, presented a summary of the facts before the bench.
