Fakhruddins appointment as CEC challenged

Appointment of Justice (r) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim as CEC has been challenged in the SC.

A citizen, Shahid, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging Fakhruddin G Ebrahim’s appointment as chief election commissioner.The petitioner stated that Fakhruddin had served as governor Sindh, therefore he could not be appointed as CEC. It was also mentioned in the petition that Fakhruddin had pleaded PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif’s cases in various court and he had an affiliation with PML-N.President Zardari appointed Justice Fakhruddin as CEC on recommendation of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.Earlier, the parliamentary committee formed to finalize a consensus name for the post of Chief Election Commissioner under Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Khurshid Shah, unanimously proposed Fakhruddin’s name for the post responsible for holding of elections in the country.Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) suggested his name to the committee.
