Country faces 3500 MW power shortfall

The country faces 3,500MW electricity shortfall after decrease in demand.

According to PEPCO authorities, the total current demand of electricity is 16078 megawatts while the powered generation is 125078 megawatts.The Hydal projects are generating 3898 megawatts, thermal plants 1797 megawatts and IPPS are generating 6883 megawatts of electricity.The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) is receiving 690 megawatts of electricity.Currently, the loadshedding duration in urban areas is 8 hours while rural areas are facing 12 hours loadshedding.The power supply by the IPP has improved due to improvement in oil and gas supply. However, power generation through water resources has reduced due to different factors including dead leve of Tarbela Dam and reduction in water release by Indus River System Authority (IRSA).
