SC seeks schedule for local body elections

Supreme Court has directed all provinces to submit schedule for local body elections by April 30.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the case regarding local body elections in Islamabad on Thursday.During today’s proceedings, reports regarding local body elections were submitted in the court by provincial representatives.The report submitted by Punjab suggested that there is a possibility to conduct local government elections by August 10.However, Balochistan and Sindh in thereports maintained that voter lists are yet to be prepared, further, law and order situation is also a hurdle in conducting local government elections.On this, Chief Justice directed provincial chief secretaries and attorney general to submit schedule for the elections by April 30.The elections have not taken place since the last local government (LG) ended in 2009.
