Image saying Sony will publish PlayStation group chats by May 2023 is from satire account
The post comes from an Instagram account which routinely posts satirical content.
(Reuters) - A meme which says Japanese technology company Sony will release all PlayStation party chats to the public by May 2023 stems from a satirical Instagram account. Its format as a post from a news outlet has been mistaken by some social media users to be real.
The image (here) shows a person holding a PlayStation control in front of a television. Overlaid text reads: “Sony to release all PlayStation party chats to the public by May 2023 – I think a lot of us are going to be in trouble…”
It also includes a “News” tag and a watermark for the Instagram account. However, the Instagram account adds in the caption: “This is satire. This is a joke/meme. This is for entertainment purposes only.”
The account’s biography reads: “The best memes and fake news posts daily.” (www.instagram.com/itsfinisher/)
Other social media users have shared the post seemingly unaware that it is from an account which intentionally shares satirical posts (here, here and here).
No credible new reports suggest that Sony will release private chats among PlayStation users to the public (bit.ly/3mfDd7C).
PlayStation's verified Twitter account, which regularly posts updates on the gaming consoles manufactured by Sony, has also not tweeted such an announcement (mobile.twitter.com/PlayStation).
An Oct. 14, 2020, tweet from the account states that it does not record group chats (here).
Sony was not immediately available for comment.
