Images show fossilized remains of large sloth, not human giant
A spokesperson for museum confirmed that images show the remains of now-extinct giant ground sloth
(Reuters) - Images of meters-long fossils show remains of giant sloths housed at the Paleontological Museum Megatherium in Ecuador, not remains of a human giant.
Examples of the photo shared online can be viewed (here) and (here). “The remains of GIANTS were discovered in the small Equadorian village of Changaimina, 7m in height. Connected to an ancient human race exceeding 12m,” reads part of the text accompanying the posts.
A reverse image search reveals that the photograph showing people pictured alongside the fossil was published via the Ecuador section of the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (IPGH) website (here), archived (archive.is/wip/kLb6J).
The institute links the image to the Paleontological Museum Megatherium in Ecuador. A spokesperson for the museum confirmed to Reuters that the images show the remains of a now-extinct giant ground sloth.
A search via the Paleontological Museum Megatherium’s website reveals images of the same fossilized remains attributed to the Eremotherium Laurillardi species (here).
The website links to further reading about the giant sloth remains (here).
