Elon Musk has not yet announced his successor as Twitter CEO
(Reuters) - A screenshot of an article from a satirical blogsite has led people to falsely believe that Elon Musk has announced Donald Trump Jr. as his replacement as chief executive of Twitter.
According to the article, dated Dec. 19, billionaire Musk made the announcement after conducting a poll on his platform whereby the majority of respondents said they would like to see him step down (here).
But users on Facebook (here) and Twitter (here) apparently failed to recognise that the claim originates from a blogsite which marks itself as publishing satire (here, and the writer twitter.com/JeffOnTheRight).
Musk did indeed conduct a poll on Dec. 18 where the majority of its 17.5 million respondents voted ‘yes’, that they would like him to step down (here).
In response to a tweet the same day that claimed a successor had already been picked, Musk said: “No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor” (here).
He added on Dec. 21: “I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams” (here).
VERDICT
False. Musk has not announced a successor. The claim was originally made on a blog that publishes satire.
