(Web Desk) - Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, has undergone abdominal surgery that will keep her in the hospital for up to two weeks.

"Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to The London Clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery," Kensington Palace announced in a statement Wednesday.

"The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery."

The statement, which was sent to The Messenger, continued, "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Kensington Palace acknowledged the princess "appreciates the interest this statement will generate," but asked for as much privacy as possible given the circumstances.

"She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible," the statement read, "and her wish that her personal medical information remains private."

Middleton and husband William, Prince of Wales, share son Prince George, 10, daughter Princess Charlotte, 8, and son Prince Louis, 5.

The Palace only plans on giving an update about the princess' condition when "there is significant new information to share."

"The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements," the statement concluded.

"She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
