Film festival do Rio, the largest film festival in Latin America, opened.
Over 350 movies from 60 countries will be screened in the annual fest. Film screenings would be held during the 12-day gathering, or the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, at 40 theaters built especially for the event across the capital.Rios first 3D commercial theater Cine Carioca, located in the Complexo do Alemao, one of the largest slums in the city, would also screen 10 films from the total 18 exhibitions. A package of new, classic and rare movies, several of which would not have commercial releases in Brazil, is to be displayed in these exhibitions. Award-winning movies -- Russian film Faust, the winner of the Venice Golden Lion, Irans A Separation, the Berlin Golden Bear winner, the Venice Special Jury Prize recipient Terraferma, as well as the Cannes prize winners Drive and Poliss -- were to be featured during the festival.Local films would vie for the Cristo Redentor awards, an allusion to Rios most famous tourist spot with a statue of Jesus Christ, in fiction and documentary categories. The Skin I Live In, the latest movie by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, would be shown at the opening night of the festival. Actress Marisa Paredes staring the film would make an appearance. Apart from movie screenings, the Latin Americas largest audiovisual forum RioMarket would be held during the festival, which was expected to draw some 250,000 people. The forum, with a large number of business seminars and workshops, would gather film companies and executives, said its organizers.
