Ghulam Farid Sabris death anniversary today

The 17th death anniversary of qawwal, Ghulam Farid Sabri, is being observed today (Tuesday).

He was born in Kalyana, a village in Rohtak district in 1930. He started to take initial lessons of qawwali from his father Inayat Sabri at the age of 6. He made his first public performance at the Urs of Sufi saint Mubarik Shah in a crowd of thousands in 1946 in Kalyana. After the independence, his family had settled down in Karachi. Teaming up with his brother Maqbool Ahmed Sabri, the duo came to be known as the Sabri Brothers and earned much praised in religious circles. Their first recording, released in 1958, was a popular-hit called Mera Koi Nahin Hai Tere Siwa. Bhardo Jholi Meri Ya Muhammad, Sarela Makan Se Talab Hui, Taajdar-e-Haram, Saqiya Aur Pila, are some of their most acclaimed qawwalis.Ghulam Farid Sabri, died on April 5, 1994 in Karachi, after suffering a heart attack. More than 40,000 people attended his funeral prayer.
