The movie Empires of the Deep was originally shot in 2D. But following the success of James Cameron's Avatar, the production company decided to reshoot it in 3D. With a third of all cinema screens in China capable of showing 3D films, the Director of Photography, Rao Xiabing is hoping the bet pays off. DIRECTOR Rao Xiaobing said, I think the audiences are there. They want to see. There are a lot of people who want to see 3D movies. In Europe or U.S., there are a lot of theatres, 2D theatres, traditional theatres, it's gonna cost a lot to convert those or abandon them to build new theatres. But in China, we don't have that kind of cost. You just build new 3D theatres. China's domestic audience is the second largest in the world. The movie's executive producer, Jiang Jun, a former property developer, is also taking advantage of China's low production costs. And with Avatar taking 190 million U.S dollars in China so far, the future of 3D is looking solid.
