Czech police shot dead captor

Police moved against the man late Monday in the town of Jirkov in the northwestern Czech Republic.

 PRAGUE (AP) - Police say they have shot and killed a man who held a woman hostage for two days.

Spokeswoman Alena Bartosova said Tuesday that police had to act because the life of the hostage was threatened by the 41-year-old man, who was also suspected of rape and blackmail.

Bartosova said police moved against the man late Monday in the town of Jirkov in the northwestern Czech Republic. She said the hostage escaped unharmed.
Police gave no further details.
