MUMBAI (Web Desk) – The Indian Premier League (IPL) has suffered another major setback as its brand value dropped sharply in 2025 following the departure of several star players.

Indian media reported that geopolitical tensions in the region added to commercial uncertainty, pushing the league’s valuation down from $12 billion to $9.6 billion.

According to the Times of India, the Mumbai Indians’ brand value decreased by 9%, bringing the franchise to $108 million. Royal Challengers Bangalore recorded a 10% decline compared to last year. Chennai Super Kings experienced a more pronounced fall with a 24% reduction, while Sunrisers Hyderabad’s value slipped by 34%. Rajasthan Royals faced the steepest drop with a 35% contraction in their brand value.

The downturn follows the high-profile exits of three prominent international players from the IPL 2026 season: South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, England’s Moeen Ali, and Australia’s Glenn Maxwell. Two of these players confirmed their participation in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), adding to the disruption for the IPL.

Faf du Plessis described leaving the IPL as a “big decision”. In an Instagram post, he expressed gratitude for the support of teammates, coaches, and staff throughout his 14 seasons in the tournament, adding that he was ready to embrace a “new challenge” by joining the PSL.

Moeen Ali, who previously represented Multan Sultans in the 2020 and 2021 PSL editions, also confirmed his eagerness to return to the league. He noted that the PSL, since launching in 2016, has built a strong reputation for high-quality T20 cricket with competitive fixtures and impressive talent.

Reports from Indian media echoed the concerns, highlighting that the departure of high-profile players had coincided with the IPL’s declining commercial strength. As the league enters a crucial phase ahead of the 2026 season, the steep drop in franchise valuations has raised fresh questions over its future financial trajectory.
