Australia's Handscomb stars in Roses win

LONDON (AFP) - Australia s Peter Handscomb made 86 as Yorkshire beat Roses rivals Lancashire by 79 runs in English county cricket s One-Day Cup at Headingley on Monday.
Test batsman Handscomb top-scored in Yorkshire s total of 296 for nine.
The 26-year-old Victorian faced 78 balls, including eight fours and two sixes.
Yorkshire were 87 for three after England Test captain Joe Root fell for 21 but Handscomb and Gary Ballance (85) kept Lancashire, who opted to field first after winning the toss in overcast conditions, at bay with a 143-run partnership compiled in 20 overs.
Both batsmen contributed to their own dismissals as they each fell short of a hundred, with Yorkshire losing six wickets for 66 runs as they fell shy of 300.
But their total proved more than enough, with Lancashire collapsing to 217 all out inside 44 overs.
Handscomb was in fine touch and closed in on three figures by smashing Luke Proctor for six, four, two and another six.
But going for one more big shot, hia mistimed heave off the persevering Proctor was well caught by England paceman James Anderson, running in from deep midwicket.
Ballance, looking to regain his England place, has already scored heavily with more than 500 runs in three first-class County Championship matches.
He missed out on his fourth century in all formats at the start of this season when, two balls after being dropped reverse-sweeping, he was lbw to left-arm spinner Stephen Perry attempting a similar shot.
Lancashire s reply saw them undone by Yorkshire s spinners, with England leg-break bowler Adil Rashid striking twice and Azeem Rafiq taking four for 47.
But it was White Rose veteran Tim Bresnan who made the initial breakthrough when the ex-England pcamen got Procter to play on for 10.
Lsancashire had, surprisingly, kept England Test opener Haseeb Hameed down the order but the Red Rose move was not a success as he holed out to mid-on for just eight.
The big-hitting Liam Livingstone, a potential England prospect, struck fast bowler Liam Plunkett for two sixes before he was bowled by Rashid s googly.
Meanwhile England Test batsman Keaton Jennings s hundred set up Durham s 72-run win away to Warwickshire in their One-Day Cup match at Edgbaston.
Jennings, the son of former South African wicket-keeper Ray Jennings, made a one-ay best 139, including 19 fours and two sixes, as Durham compiled an imposing total of 313 for five in a rain-reduced 39 overs.
Durham fast bowler Mark Wood, who has been struggling with ankle problems, then took two wickets, including dismissing former England batsman Ian Bell for one, as Warwickshire were dismissed for 241 despite 92 from another ex-England international in Jonathan Trott.
Wood s return of two for 34 in eight overs was an encouraging sign for England, who have picked the fast bowler for this week s two one-day internationals against Ireland, with the 27-year-old also selected to spearhead the tournament hosts attack in next month s Champions Trophy.
