No play at all was possible on Saturday, hindering Australia's hopes of a consolation victory.

LONDON (AP) - Rain has wiped out day four of the fifth test between England and Australia at the Oval.

No play at all was possible on Saturday, seriously hindering Australia s hopes of a consolation victory in a series in which it trails 3-0.

With a saturated outfield and no prospect of the conditions improving, play was officially abandoned for the day around 4pm local time (1500 GMT).

If and when play begins on Sunday, England will resume on 247-4

trailing Australia by 245 runs. The not-out batsmen are Ian Bell on 29 and Chris Woakes on 15, with England needing another 46 runs to avoid the follow on.

Australia s hopes of recording a morale-boosting win ahead of the return series Down Under starting in November hinge on quick wickets falling on day five.
