TEHRAN (Dunya News) – The Iranian government has announced a nationwide public holiday on July 6 on the occasion of the final funeral rites of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as preparations continue for mourning ceremonies across the country.

Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the purpose of the holiday is to facilitate the return of mourners from the capital to their hometowns after attending the funeral ceremonies.

According to her, a national day of mourning will also be observed across Iran on Thursday, while Ali Khamenei will be laid to rest in Mashhad on July 8.

Under the official schedule, funeral prayers and burial ceremonies for Ali Khamenei will be held from July 4 to July 8 in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad. Condolence ceremonies will also be organized in Iraqi cities including Baghdad, Kazmain, Karbala and Najaf.

It is worth mentioning that Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial US attack on Iran on February 28.
