MOSCOW (Shahid Ghuman) – Russia on Monday demanded that the United States immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
The demand was made in a statement issued by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It stated that Russia would continue its unwavering support for the Venezuelan government’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and national interests. Russia reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close and comprehensive cooperation with Venezuela, the statement added.
Russia urged the US leadership to release Venezuela’s legally elected president and his wife.
According to the statement, on January 3 the United States carried out attacks on civilian and military targets in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, which Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto described as open military aggression. Following these attacks, a state of emergency was imposed in Venezuela.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the attack on Venezuela, claiming that President Maduro and his wife had been arrested and transferred out of the country. Subsequently, on January 5, both were presented before the Federal Court for the Southern District of New York, where charges related to drug trafficking were brought against them. President Maduro and his wife have denied all the allegations.
