A CRPF personnel shot himself dead with his service rifle at an Odisha camp, with police confirming suicide amid reports of stress over posting away from home.
ODISHA (Web Desk) - An official of India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) shot himself dead with his service rifle in the Indian state of Odisha.
According to Indian media, the incident occurred at a military camp in Odisha, where officers rushed to the scene after hearing a gunshot. Upon arrival, they found their colleague lying in a pool of blood and breathing his last.
The injured personnel was shifted in critical condition to a nearby military hospital, where doctors attempted to save his life but he succumbed to his injuries. Doctors said the death was caused by excessive bleeding, as the bullet was fired from very close range at the temple.
Odisha Police stated that the official service rifle was found at the scene and the post-mortem report confirmed suicide. Police added that no suicide note was recovered from the personnel’s room, though he was reportedly distressed over not being posted near his home.
After completing legal formalities, the body was sent to the personnel’s native village. An inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
However, it was noted that in India, findings of such inquiry committees are rarely made public, nor are responsibilities clearly fixed.
Suicide incidents among Indian security personnel due to low morale and mental stress are reportedly common, and the Ministry of Defence has previously issued a detailed report addressing the issue.
