Northern California struck by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake
(Web Desk) - According to the US Geological Survey, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California on Sunday morning, in an area where one had already struck less than two weeks before.
The earthquake struck at 11:35 a.m. PDT, about 30 miles south of Eureka and 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell, as per the USGS. According to preliminary data from the agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 17.3 miles.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said they were monitoring the situation and working with local officials to assess the extent of the damage.
“Stay safe - check gas and water lines for damage or leaks, prepare for aftershocks, and remember to drop, cover, and hold on,” his office said on Twitter.
When the earthquake struck, KGO-TV in San Francisco broadcasted surveillance video from inside the police department.
Earlier, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the region, killing two people.
Rio Dell, population 3,367, is located 267.5 miles north of Sacramento.
“It was insane. This time, the earthquake felt more powerful “Rio Dell Mayi Garnes spoke to CNN.”It was shorter but more brutal. My refrigerator shifted two feet. Things came out of the fridge. The violence has caused a crack in my wall.”
Garnes reported that 27 homes were red-tagged in the previous quake, indicating that they were unsafe due to damage. In Rio Dell, 73 more homes were yellow-tagged.
