China had taken effective measures and achieved results against COVID-19: Spokesman

(Reuters) - China is willing to cooperate with other countries and contribute to the global fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Thursday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday characterized the COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic, saying it was concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the levels of inaction in some countries.

Following the WHO announcement, Geng stressed the importance and urgency for global cooperation amid the virus outbreak, and said China will continue to make contributions to the global efforts against the virus.

Foreign Ministry spokesman said "According to the latest report on the WHO website, COVID-19 cases have been reported in more than 100 countries, and some of them are in a serious situation."

"The WHO has made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic, but also stressed that calling it a global pandemic will not change the WHO’s assessment of the threat of the virus or what the WHO and countries should do. The WHO did so to renew its appeal to member states for greater political commitment and more resources to fight the epidemic," Geng told a press conference in Beijing.

The spokesman said that China had taken effective measures and achieved results in its battle against the COVID-19 epidemic, and it will make contributions to the global epidemic control while combating the disease at home.

"Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Chinese government has taken the most comprehensive, most thorough and most rigorous prevention and control measures with a highly responsible attitude towards the Chinese people and the people of the world, and fought resolutely against the epidemic.”

“ Thanks to the hard work of the whole country, positive changes have taken place in epidemic prevention and control in China, and important progress has been made so far.”

“ In the next step, China is willing to contribute to the global fight while continuing to make every effort for its own epidemic prevention and control," said Geng.
