KARNATAKA (Web Desk) - A 50-year-old activist of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) who sustained injuries during clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups clash on the occasion of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary, died in Madikeri government hospital today (Tuesday), Indian media reported.

According to details, the scuffle broke out when a Muslim group that was taking out a procession to mark Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary through Madikeri town came face to face with Hindutva activists protesting against the celebrations.

The brawl went out of control in the presence of police personnel on the ground. Police later resorted to a baton-charge to disperse the protesters.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has described Tipu Sultan as an early freedom fighter who fought the British and governed the Mysore region in a secular manner the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have described Tipu Sultan as a ‘religious bigot’ who forced local communities to convert to Islam.

“Tipu Sultan was secular, he fought the British rulers in three wars. In a way the freedom struggle began with the Mysore wars between Tipu and the British,” the Karnataka CM said.

State BJP leader Prahlad Joshi had on Monday issued a directive to all BJP leaders in the state to stay away from all events held around the state to mark the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan.
