Earlier in the day, the regional government imposed a curfew in Srinagar, Shopian, Kulgam and other areas of the valley, placing barricades and strands of barbed wire on streets to prevent Shiite mourners from taking part in the rituals of the month of Muharram.

Many Hurriyet leaders including Syed Ali Gillani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Yaseen Malik and dozens of other leaders are under house-arrest or in police custody.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Muharram processions have been banned in Srinagar since 1989.
