OSLO (AFP) - Norway on Wednesday proposed hosting an international donors  conference to help millions of Syrians displaced by war.

Prime Minister Erna Solberg told a press conference that she had put forward the idea in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"The international community emphatically has to increase its efforts for refugees and civilians in Syria and neighbouring countries," Solberg said.

More than four million Syrians have fled their country, in the largest exodus from any country since 1992, when the number of refugees from Afghanistan reached 4.6 million, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in July.

Millions more Syrians have been displaced internally.
