Summary

Two blasts at a Kenyan prayer meeting including church leaders and politicians campaigning against a proposed new constitution, killed five people and injured at least 79, the Prime Minister said on Sunday. This is a very unfortunate incident where so many people have been injured. I have been given a full brief by the doctors in charge that five lives have been lost and 79 people totally have been wounded here. It is a very, very regrettable incident and this kind of incident stands condemned in the strongest terms possible by the government, Prime Minister Raila Odinga told reporters at the main Kenyatta National Hospital. It was not immediately known if the blast was targeting those campaigning against the proposed new constitution. Odinga said it was also too early to start pointing fingers. We don't know of yet the cause of this incident, we therefore do not want to get involved in speculation. At the moment all the efforts should be directed at helping those who have been wounded, those who have been seriously injured, he added. Dozens of wounded were rushed to the hospital while anxious relatives gathered outside. Sunday's blasts come barely three days after US Vice President Joe Biden concluded a visit to Kenya.
