ANKARA (AFP) - Four members of Turkey s military were killed on Tuesday when two air force jets crashed in the Malatya region in the southeast of the country, the Turkish army said.

The armed forces said in a statement that it lost radar and radio contact with two RF-4E reconnaissance aircraft as they were conducting a planned night training.

The planes took off from Malatya airbase at 1600 GMT and lost communication with the base at 1705 GMT, the online statement said.

"Search operations were immediately started. The wreckage of our two planes was discovered and unfortunately four pilots were martyred."

The army said the two jets crashed because of an accident but gave no further information on the cause of the incident nor why the two jets crashed apparently simultaneously.

Each plane was reported to have been carrying a pilot and a co-pilot. There were no survivors.

Private NTV channel said that rescuers as well as rescue helicopters, fire crews and ambulances were deployed to the scene after locals reported explosions.

It added that heavy fog was preventing the vehicles from reaching the area.
