Summary
US President Barack Obama vowed to reverse the Taliban momentum and forge peace in Afghanistan. In his first, long-anticipated visit to Afghanistan since taking office in January 2009, Obama took pains to address his message to both the thousands of American troops fighting in the country and his Afghan hosts. The US President pressed Afghan leaders to end corruption and rally American troops in the war on the Taliban. We are here to help Afghans forge a hard-won peace while realizing the extraordinary potential of the Afghan people, Obama said in a rousing speech to an estimated 2,000 US troops. Our broad mission is clear, Obama said of the bloody, dragging war against the Taliban launched in late 2001. Al-Qaeda and their extremist allies are a threat to the people of Afghanistan and a threat to the people of America, but they're also a threat to people all around the world. We're going to deny Al-Qaeda safe haven. We're going to reverse the Taliban's momentum. Obama also urged Karzai to step up the fight against corruption and the drugs trade. The US leader made the dramatic through-the-night flight to Afghanistan to thank American troops for their tremendous sacrifices and to rally them in the fight at the center of his administration's counter-terrorism efforts.
