Suspected Somali militants kill 48 in Kenya attack: Red Cross

Summary Security forces were still searching for victims of the attack.

 

MOMBASA, Kenya, June 16, 2014 (AFP) - At least 48 people are confirmed to have died in an overnight attack by suspected Shebab militants on the Kenyan coastal town of Mpeketoni, police and the Kenyan Red Cross said.

"The death toll has risen to 48," the organisation said on its Twitter feed, as local officials said security forces were still searching for victims of the attack.

"The number of bodies taken to the mortuary is 47, while one has died in hospital," a local police officer also said.

A member of the local police was also confirmed as being among the dead.
