A year of legal pressure for Italy's Berlusconi

A year of legal pressure for Italy's Berlusconi

Summary There are indications that the attention in Italy is shifting away from Berlusconi.

NAPLES (AFP) - The trial against Silvio Berlusconi for bribing a senator starting on Tuesday is only the latest in a string of legal tussles dating back to the 1980s before the billionaire tycoon began his political career.

Having now lost his shield of parliamentary immunity, the former prime minister will be under particular pressure this year during ongoing trials and appeals.

Here is a list of all the ongoing cases against him.

Bribery:

Berlusconi goes on trial Monday for allegedly paying a three-million euro ($4.1 million) bribe to get senator Sergio De Gregorio to join his party s ranks in 2006, helping bring down a rival centre-left government.

Tax Fraud:

Italy s supreme court in August 2013 sentenced Berlusconi for tax fraud -- his first ever definitive conviction, which triggered his expulsion from the Senate and a ban on taking part in the next elections.

He also faces up to a year of house arrest or community service for the crime, which is linked to his business interests, pending a court decision later this year.

 Bunga Bunga :

Berlusconi is appealing against a seven-year suspended sentence for having sex with an underage 17-year-old prostitute when he was prime minister and abusing his official powers by having her released from custody.

In an appeal trial expected this year, he will also seek to overturn the lifetime ban from parliament included in the conviction over his liaison with Karima El-Mahroug, better known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer".

Witness Tampering:

Prosecutors in the same case are also investigating Berlusconi and his lawyers for allegedly bribing the women who testified at the trial to keep quiet about the raunchy goings-on at his "Bunga Bunga" parties.

Police Wiretap:

In an appeal trial due to start in March, Berlusconi will also seek to overturn a one-year sentence for leaking a secret police wiretap in a newspaper owned by his family to damage a left-wing political rival.

Divorce:

Berlusconi s divorce from his second wife, Veronica Lario, is due to be formalized in the coming weeks after a bitter years-long legal battle in which she accused him of cavorting with underage girls.

A court will also have to decide on Berlusconi s alimony payments, with an unresolved conflict between two outstanding court rulings -- one for a 3.0 million euro a month cheque, the other for 1.4 million euros.
