CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt s military on Thursday urged the country to reconcile and avoid revenge attacks after it toppled president Mohamed Morsi in a popularly backed move that has outraged the Islamist s supporters.
"The armed forces believe that the forgiving nature and manners of the Egyptian people, and the eternal values of Islam, do not allow us to turn to revenge and gloating," it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, an alliance of Islamist parties and movements including ousted president Mohamed Morsi s Muslim Brotherhood has called for "peaceful protests" on Friday to denounce the military s overthrow of the Islamist president.
The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy called for "peaceful protests on Friday in all of Egypt s provinces to denounce the military coup against legitimacy and in support of the legitimacy of President Morsi".
