Summary A governor's compound in western Afghanistan has come under attack by the Taliban.

KABUL (AP) - The officials say Tuesday's attack began with an explosion outside the governor's compound in the capital of western Farah province, sparking a gunbattle between the attackers and security forces.

Nazir Khan Khedmat, a provincial council member who was inside the building when the attack began, says intensive gunfire lasted for about 20 minutes.

Deputy provincial governor Yonus Rasouli says the explosion damaged many government buildings in the area. He says there were casualties among civilians and security forces, but he had no reports of officials killed or wounded.

He says security forces are still battling attackers holed up in a nearby building.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call.
