PORT SAID: Thousands of people who have turned out for a mass funeral for 35 people killed in rioting in the coastal city of Port Said are chanting against Egypt s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Mourners in the funeral procession were shouting "There is no God but Allah, and Morsi is God s enemy" after praying for the dead Sunday at the city s Mariam Mosque.

There were no police or army troops in sight, but the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. The source of the gunfire was not immediately known.

Shots were fired on Sunday in the Egyptian canal city of Port Said at the funeral of people killed in clashes triggered by death sentences on supporters of a local football team, witnesses told AFP.

Thousands had joined the funeral procession after noon prayers when loud gunfire sent mourners running in several directions amid chaotic scenes before calm was restored.

Bodies wrapped in white shrouds were laid in open coffins, carried by a sea of mourners along Port Said s main avenue.
