COLOMBO: The United Nations has urged Sri Lankan authorities to reconsider efforts to impeach the country s chief justice.

A parliamentary committee earlier found Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake guilty of unexplained wealth and misuse of power and said she is unfit to hold office.

The U.N. s Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaulo, issued a statement urging her impeachment be reconsidered "due to the lack of due process and fair trial guarantees" and to ensure the judiciary can operate independently.

Bandaranayake has denied the charges against her. Critics of the impeachment see it as a move to stifle the independence of the judiciary.

Parliament is expected to vote for her impeachment when it convenes this month. The president then could decide to dismiss or retain her.
