The earthquake death-toll has crossed 1,100 in Padang region of Indonesia while United Nations (UN) and Red Cross rescuers fear that 4,000 more victims are buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings, with little chance of survival. Quake-hit Indonesia appealed for foreign aid yesterday as the stench of decomposing bodies hung over wrecked buildings. Indonesia's health minister said that the destruction did not appear to be as extensive as first feared, but said the number killed could still number in the low thousands.
