Summary

US President Barack Obama will chair a summit-level meeting of the UN Security Council on September 24 on the topic of nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs announced. This is only the fifth time in the history of the UN that a head-of-state-level Security Council summit has been convened, and the first time ever that a US president will chair a UN Security Council summit, Gibbs said during a White House briefing. Also later this month, Obama will deliver his first address to the UN General Assembly, Gibbs said. Preparations for the meeting have been started and members of the UNSC have been informed in this regard.
