Pentagon suggests Iraq war weapons be given to Pakistan

Summary

Pentagon has suggested to handover weapons being used in Iraq to Pak Army to expedite the war against Taliban. According to the documents, US Department of Defense formally presented the proposal before Congress in June. Pentagon believed that weapons and war accessories which were not needed in Iraq should be shifted to Pakistan. Sources disclosed that Congress showed cold attitude towards the proposal. Some in Congress questioned what safeguards would ensure the arms would not end up being diverted to Pakistan's border with India, a nuclear-armed power like Pakistan. Department of Defense maintained that Pak Army needed modern weapons on large scale to launch operation in North Waziristan. It said that if the weapons were not provided to Pakistan, the Waziristan operation would be delayed giving a chance to Taliban to rearrange their groups.
