Summary The academic management of St. Aloysious College in India's southern Karnataka state banned Burqa.

The academic management of St. Aloysious College in Mangalore city of Indias southern Karnataka state banned Burqa (veil) in the classroom and during examination.Muslim face veils are the Arabic-style niqabs that leave the eyes uncovered and Afghan-style burqas that cover the face with a cloth grid.Reportedly, the St. Aloysious College has brought a news prospectus in which the girls are prohibited from wearing burqa inside classroom and during examination in order to maintain uniformity in the classroom.Calling it as a rumour, a student, Samiza said that the rumour was wrong and fake as there is no discrimination between any caste and religion in this college.I am in final year and I know, how is this college and till now in these three years, no one has taught me wear the shawl (cloth) or to remove my burqa, any point of time, so that is why I was saying that such rumours are very much fake because the fact is there is no discrimination between any caste or any religion in this college, said Samiza.According to media reports, the rule came up in order to thwart malpractice during examination as observed in few cases in the past.Condemning the ban on Burqa, spokesperson of Darul Uloom Deoband, Asharaf Usmani in Muzaffarnagar city of Indias northern Uttar Pradesh said that the college should not nix religious sentiments with education.India is a democratic country and one cant prohibit religious practices as this is a free country. This is not a slave country, people of all faiths are free to practice their religions, this kind of restriction can not be accepted and is some one has tried to enforce such a rule this we condemn it, said Usmani. The ban on burqa has already given fuel to the issue and may become a controversy as many of the Muslim students might take it as an offence and quit education.
