Summary Canadian woman travels to Pakistan, marries Lower Dir man in private court wedding after relationship began on social media.
LOWER DIR (Dunya News) - A woman from Canada has traveled to Pakistan and married a young man from Lower Dir after the two reportedly met and fell in love through social media.
A Lower Dir police official confirmed the marriage, saying the foreign woman and the local man voluntarily appeared in court and completed their marriage legally.
According to police, the woman arrived in Islamabad about a week ago, where she was welcomed by the groom’s family and relatives. After staying there for a few days, she traveled to Timergara in Lower Dir and checked into a hotel.
Authorities said the groom’s family wanted to keep the marriage private. For that reason, the ceremony was held in Timergara instead of their native area, Dir Maidan.
The couple later appeared before a local magistrate and submitted all required documents. They informed the court that they wished to marry of their own free will. After receiving legal approval, their marriage ceremony was solemnized.
Police added that due to security concerns, the Canadian woman was not allowed to travel to Dir Maidan. Following the wedding, the couple stayed at a local hotel. Close relatives were also reportedly not invited in an effort to maintain privacy.
The official said the couple told the court their connection began on social media, gradually developed into a relationship, and eventually led to their decision to marry.
Police said the newlyweds are expected to stay in Dir for a few days before returning to Islamabad for further stay.
Officials noted that this is not the first such case in the region, as several foreign women have previously traveled to Pakistan to marry local men after online relationships.
