A stray dog was seen carrying an amputated human leg from a hospital in Shimla after staff allegedly left a storeroom unlocked, prompting an official inquiry.
SHIMLA (Web Desk) - A stray dog was filmed running away with an amputated human leg from a hospital in Shimla, reportedly due to staff negligence, according to Indian media reports.
The incident occurred outside the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities, where a video showed the animal carrying the severed limb in its mouth. The footage quickly went viral on social media, triggering public outrage and prompting authorities to launch an investigation.
Reports stated that the leg had been amputated during surgery on a 61-year-old patient last week. Following the procedure, the severed limb was placed in a hospital storeroom with instructions for proper disposal.
An internal inquiry reportedly found that on 22 February, staff members forgot to lock the storeroom door. During that time, the dog is believed to have entered the room, taken the amputated limb and fled the premises.
Hospital authorities have since issued show-cause notices to the staff concerned and initiated legal and departmental action. Officials said strict measures would be taken to ensure proper biomedical waste handling procedures are followed in future.
The incident has raised serious questions regarding hospital safety standards and the management of medical waste.
